To shave or not to shave during summer weather?

This is a question many #dogowners ask. It is a real dilemma for many. The answer depends on the type of #breed, #coat, age of your #dog, lifestyle, environment and previous history among many other factors...

#Hypoallergenicdogs such as #poodles, #oodles, #shihtzus, #maltese and mixed breeds deriving from these benefit from ongoing #grooming no matter what the weather as their #coat keeps growing. #Clipping these #breeds is pivotal to their health and wellbeing as they can get #matted and have serious skin issues.

Other breeds, however, such as #doublecoated #dogs need their hair length to regulate heat and insulate from the elements. Dogs with #hair that grows to a certain length and then stops, do not need and neither do they benefit from shaving. In fact, if they do get shaved, they get irreversible damage and often the hair doesn't grow back the same. The #coat becomes softer, thicjer, curlier, and prone to #matting...Dogs such as #pomeranians, #huskies, #germansheperds, #corgis, #pugs, #chihuahuas, #dashounds etc can get rashes, irritation, bald spots (alopecia), and other issues from shaving. For many, the #hair never grows back the same again.

Contrary to many people's belief, these breeds do not get cooler if #shaved, quiet the opposite, they get overheated as they loose their natural protection and ability to regulate their temperature once their #undercoat is #shaved. #Shaving does not reduce #shedding either. #Shaved dogs still #shed shorter #hairs.

Unfortunately, there are times when the circumstances demand #clipping, eg. surgery, sick or #elderlydogs with various issues requiring ongoing treatments etc. Apart from these cases, the best thing you can do for your #dog during summertime is keep #brushing them, #deshed them, keep them #clean and #tidy and keep them out of hot surfaces and extreme heat. If in doubt, ask your #groomer for advice.
